Create the Mood!

Retirement Party Themes create an atmosphere of fun. It makes the retiree feel special - as it should. Invitations, music, speeches and decorations must be in sync with the retirement party theme. My favorite theme is "The Best is Yet to Come".

Unless it is decided that the retirement party will be a surprise party, it is better to consult with the retiree. Of course, that doesn't mean that all surprises need to be revealed. Surprises, after all, are part of the fun.

Spouses and family can provide valuable information to make the party very memorable. They will know about former co-workers that are special friends. Relatives that should be there and dear friends that need to attend.

For retirement theme parties it is necessary to consult with the retiree or the retiree's spouse and family to insure that the "theme" is accurate and appropriate. A party planner could know that the retiree was an avid golfer for years. Create a "golfer's dream" retirement party. Then discover at the party that an unreported back injury has ended the retiree's golf career.

Invitations and Music

An invitation in written form or a verbal announcement of the retirement party is typical. Flyers can also be distributed. An invitation must include the party date, time and location. That may seem rather obvious unless you've experienced someone showing up on the wrong date, at the wrong time and place.

Background music or even a musician or combo will add to the retirement party theme atmosphere. The first choice is the retiree's personal preference - unless it would be offensive in some way to the remaining guests. Few retiree's would prefer loud "hard rock" music for example.

Food and Gifts

A retirement party at the end of the work day in a small office is much different than a Saturday night party in the party room of a private golf club. The small office party may order pizza and stock some beer in the lounge refrigerator.

The decorations and the quality of the retirement party theme might also be significantly different. Several hours to decorate a party room at the club could create a well-developed theme with balloons, banners and props.

A retirement gift can be a nice touch at a retirement party. Both the party and the gift (if there is one) should special and memorable. Click on "gifts" for lots of retirement party gift ideas.

Planning a retirement theme party doesn't have to be a stressful. Be creative! Consider the limitless options. Make it fun and exciting. For more retirement party ideas click here.
