The best weight loss program is not the one that predicts fast and quick weight loss. It is a plan that promotes exercise and healthy food choices.

Select a weight loss program that will fit into your lifestyle. If you do not, you will fail. You know yourself best. Make the right choice. It is a huge responsibility.

Yoyo Dieting Is A National Pastime!

First, you must be passionate about losing weight. It is a long term commitment. Losing weight will require several lifestyle changes. Less TV and more exercise, for example.

If you are not the type of person that is self-motivated, you may need to join a group program where there is strict regimentation. Speakers and other participants in the program will help to motivate you.

Most people in this country can afford to lose a few pounds. The majority do it on their own. Losing weight, however, is less than half the battle. As the majority of people put the weight back on (aka "yoyo dieting").

An internet search for the best weight loss program will give you lots of ideas. I recommend that you carefully select the one that fits your personality and lifestyle. Why? Because failure happens often. If the program is too restrictive for you, you'll soon quit.

Eat Less and Move More!

That sounds sort of simple. Doing it is the hard part.

Ask yourself some real serious questions:

  • Do I want to be healthier and live longer?
  • Is being overweight the path in life that I choose?
  • Am I serious about changing my lifestyle?
  • Will my personality permit me to do this on my own or will I need help?

I am sure that you could add a few more questions to the list that would pertain to you. Do ask the questions. And don't start a weight loss program until you are fully committed. Most who fail lack the research and commitment.

Calories In versus Calories Out!

How many calories (unit of energy stored in food) do we burn each day just doing our routine activities? That is a question that varies depending on one's weight and level of activity. A mom, weighing 150 pounds, trying to keep up with 3 active children may burn 1800 calories in a routine day.

A 120 pound women working at a desk for several hours each day may only burn 1500 calories per day. To lose weight she would have to reduce her daily intake of calories to 1400. (The mom burning 1800 calories per day could gradually lose weight while eating 1700 calories.)

Men burn more calories than women. But, the amount of weight lost will still be a function of burning more calories than is needed to maintain life.

So, here is the bottom line. Keep a food journal. Attempt to calculate your caloric intake. Reduce the number of calories consumed to below that number and/or burn more calories and you will lose weight.

Exceptions To "Calories In" versus "Calories Out"!

Obesity is a major health problem. Accordingly, weight loss techniques have been studied extensively. The best weight loss program will not suggest that you skip meals, for example.

Skipping meals can be interpreted by the body as a need to store fat. Over aggressive dieting can steal protein from lean tissue and muscle causing a gaunt looking dieter. And, it is a real health hazard if cardiac muscle is affected.

Most weight loss programs will suggest several meals each day (5 or 6). Smaller meals more often, apparently works better to get the weight off and keep it off. Every quality program will tell you to never skip breakfast.
